EXPERIENCE

I have wide-ranging experience of assessing and quantifying past, present and future care needs / loss of services in the context of personal injury or alleged clinical negligence. Reports prepared include care needs resulting from multiple injuries, orthopaedic injuries, upper / lower limb injuries (including amputation), brain injury, spinal cord injury, visual impairment and care needs resulting from alleged delay in treatment / alleged negligent treatment.

I am accustomed to participating in joint discussions, preparing joint statements and attending conferences with Counsel and I have given evidence in Court. Training courses attended include The CPR Compliant Expert (including the Single Joint Expert), Advanced Report Writing,The Expert's Discussion and Day in Court.

On completion of nurse training, I worked at Birmingham Children's Hospital and Birmingham General Hospital. During seventeen years with the British Nursing Association (BNA) as branch and area manager, I gained extensive experience in assessing the nursing, care, domestic and social needs of clients in the community, identifying the services required and preparing costings. This was carried out in conjunction with recruiting nurses and care assistants, appropriate matching with clients and managing the services provided. This involved tailoring services to meet needs arising from a broad range of clinical conditions, taking into account individual circumstances, which varied greatly, and adapting the service as needs changed. I liaised with fellow professionals from healthcare and social services sectors. My responsibilities included service standards, service development and staff training, which I undertook regularly myself.

I have a Further Education Teacher's Certificate and a Certificate in Health Education, which entailed putting theory into practice in both contexts. In order to extend my knowledge and breadth of experience, I progressed to a Certificate in Education, Training and Development and a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion. My MSc in Health and Social Care involved carrying out research into rehabilitation issues following personal injury. This identified factors that may facilitate claimants' needs being met and also possible impediments, thus indicating ways in which claimants' chances of receiving appropriate and timely rehabilitation may be increased, thereby maximising their recovery potential.

My continuing professional development includes attending courses and conferences with particular focus on aspects of brain injury, rehabilitation, case management and issues relevant to the expert witness.
