Registered General Nurse - 2010

BSc(Hons) Nursing, First Class (2010)

World Young Leaders in Dementia

I am a Registered General Nurse with a broad range of Nursing experience both clinical and managerial and am a Quality and Safety Manager at NHS England.

I have experience in community nursing, intensive care, elderly care, dementia care, continuing health care, general acute medical care, Care Quality Commission ( CQC) inspections in the hospital and adult care social.

In addition to my current inspecting role I provide expert witness nursing reports for the Court on care and nursing breach of duty. I understand my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules pertaining to expert witnesses.

My specialist areas are:

Elderly Care
Nursing Homes
Continuing Health Care Assessments & Funding
General Acute Care
Community Care
Discharge Planning
Chronic Conditions
Pain Management
Wound Care

Since 2013 I have worked as an inspector and specialist nursing advisor for the CQC as an adult social care and hospital inspector. I am responsible for leading an inspection team of specialist advisors and advise on clinical issues, best practice, and regulation compliance. I have a solid working knowledge of healthcare regulations and issues pertaining to safeguarding adults.

My career experience to date also includes working as a senior nurse reviewer/assessor for The Welsh Health Board responsible for the day-to-day management and implementation and review of eligibility for continuing NHS Health Care and NHS-Funded Registered Nursing Care on behalf of the CCG. I was directly responsible

for the coordination and management of care home self-assessments, service user reviews, final reporting, action planning, and oversight of the care provided. My role coupled as a safeguarding role where I regularly filed safeguarding complaints, attended meetings with external stakeholders, and oversaw patient care and safety with the external provider. I was Project Lead on nurse quality monitoring, and introduced a system whereby nurses could self-inspect the nursing element of nursing homes (general, mental health, and learning disabilities). The overall aim was to reduce the number of safeguarding cases by raising the standard of Nursing care. Once the initial project was ready for implementation my role adapted to educating, training, mentoring, and leading a team of nurses in their new roles.

I also work as a nurse consultant in governance, compliance, and crisis management. My responsibilities are to conduct comprehensive risk assessments, aid performance management, coach managers, review compliance and governance, develop audits, and manage deep dives into complex structures, and systems providers need to be improved in order to maintain their registration. I have a strong understanding and experience of clinical governance from my PhD, quality improvement project lead, and CQC inspection work. This requires a comprehensive understanding of NMC and CQC regulations.

I attend regular training updates and seminars in order to maintain and progress my professional development. I am currently finishing my PhD in nursing (2013- 2018) 'What works for people with dementia, their families and staff when being discharged from a hospital to a care home: a realist driven study'. I have won prizes, awards, presented my PhD internationally, published, and am an expert peer reviewer for the Royal College of Nursing, Nursing Management Journal.
