I am a Registered General Nurse with 34 years experience.  I have worked within General Practice for 28 years initially as a Practice nurse and following further training as an advanced nurse practitioner and independent nurse prescriber.

In my current clinical role, I am the first point of contact for patients and I deal with a wide range of undiagnosed symptoms from minor illness and ailments, chronic disease management and emergency care.  This involves using clinical assessment and examination skills to assess patients, deciding on a working diagnosis, arranging and interpreting diagnostic tests and prescribing treatment or offering specialist nursing advice.

In addition to my current clinical role I provide expert witness reports for the Court on nursing breach of duty. I understand my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules pertaining to expert witnesses.

My specialist areas of practice include :

General Practice Nursing Care –  including treatment room procedures

Independent Nurse Prescribing

Respiratory Care – Asthma, COPD

Allergies

Community Gynaecology

Contraception -including fitting and removal of contraceptive implants

Sexual Health

Management of Heart Failure

Management of Anti Coagulation

During my time in general practice I have under taken extensive training and am experienced in all aspects of General practice nursing. I have specialist knowledge in respiratory care and management – particularly asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; and also the care and management of women’s heath – gynaecology, contraception and sexual health.  I am trained and experienced in fitting and removal of contraceptive implants.  I  have experience in teaching and mentoring other practice nurses within my specialist clinical areas.

I am site lead for respiratory and anticoagulation and have previously been GP Partnership wide Clinical Lead for respiratory and allergy, supporting six GP practices with implementation of guidelines and leading on initiation of changing practice.

I have experience of managing teams of nurses.  As nurse manager I was responsible CQC compliance, writing and updating clinical protocols, conducting nurse appraisals and recruitment as well as the day to day management of a nursing department.  I also worked as the nurse representative of the visiting clinic governance team ensuring practices in the area were delivering  at a good standard of care to their patients.

I have had active involvement in local Primary Care Groups as Practice Nurse Representative and have been involved in chairing working groups e.g. nursing protocol and policies working group to develop nursing protocols to be used to standardise practice within the area.

I attend regular training events and seminars in order to maintain my professional competency and development.
