I am a registered nurse and have over 30 years’ experience. I trained as a Registered Children’s Nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London and a Registered General Nurse in Watford, Hertfordshire. I have a wealth of experience and knowledge working with children and adults who have complex health care conditions, including brain injuries, ventilated clients, cerebral palsy, and many other complex conditions and disabilities in both hospital and community settings.
Following qualification my career path allowed me to gain skills, knowledge, and experience in the fields of health risk assessment, dietary analysis, vaccine research, public health, neurological conditions, and liability report writing for clinical nursing practice and community complex care.
I previously worked as Operations Director screening workforces for health risk and training staff to help promote programmes of care. I successfully gained a Master’s in Public Health and developed a health promotion service enabling people to adopt a healthier lifestyle and introduced tailored weight management programmes for adults and children.
In 2004 I effectively set up and managed a children’s palliative care team in Gloucestershire using lottery funding, enabling children and families with complex conditions to have nursing care and support in their own home. This involved a total care solution, recruiting and training staff, managing all clinical care in the home and working with all agencies to promote the best quality care for the child and their family. Identified and established training needs for care teams working in the home environment, providing a platform for them to understand their role and the difference working with clients at home on a one-to-one basis.
Further senior management roles provided experience within the community care environment. Managing teams of carers and nurses, setting up, implementing, and delivering 24/7 complex care packages in the community for adults and children, some of whom were ventilator-dependent. I gained considerable complex care experience and expertise in this field including carrying out comprehensive needs assessment, goal planning, risk assessments, and care planning for a variety of clients in a cost-effective way. This involved training and managing all levels of staff to work with complex care conditions in the home with assessment and care planning processes engaged with teams to ensure best practice.
In addition to my expert work, for the last eight years I have worked as a Case Manager and owner of an independent case management and care management organisation, supporting adults and children through rehabilitation to reach their full potential. This includes responsibility for co-ordinating care, tailoring individualised care solutions; implementation and delivery of the care packages to meet the client’s individual needs, and rehabilitation and support packages, including recruitment, supervision, and support of care staff. I work closely with individuals from multi-disciplinary organisations, both statutory and independent, to support and secure care to meet an individual’s needs.
I prepare reports in personal injury and clinical negligence cases on both care needs and breach of duty. I understand the litigation process and my duties under the Civil Procedure Rules pertaining to expert witnesses and Part 35.
The type of injuries I have experience in include:
* Traumatic Brain Injury
* Cerebral Palsy
* Ventilated clients
* Complex health care conditions
I am a member of the British Association of Brain Injury Case Managers and Case Management U.K.
I regularly undertake appropriate training to ensure that my skills and knowledge are current and to maintain my professional development. I also deliver client-specific training to care staff to enable them to have a better understanding of their care role and needs of the client

‘The Claimant’s evidence as to the value of the nursing care she provided to Mr Grant was given by Ms Jodie Brookes. She is a registered nurse. The majority of her career has been spent managing care facilities in the private sector. She specialises in palliative care and has considerable experience nursing patients with mesothelioma. Ms Brookes gave careful and impressive oral evidence. She made concessions where appropriate, yet demonstrated that her conclusions were based on a careful review both of the medical notes and of what the Claimant had told her when she visited’.
Judgement of Martin Chamberlain QC
On Friday 28th June 2019 I was visited by one of your colleagues, Mrs Sue Tomkinson. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you, and how both my wife and I were very pleased with Mrs Tomkinson. We have never been in this situation before, and the thought of a stranger asking questions, some of them very personal questions, and poking around in our private lives was a thought that quite frankly filled us with dread. Our fears were soon quelled, and we were put at ease by the empathic way in which she asked her questions. We feel that all the aspects of our needs were thoroughly assessed in a very professional and friendly manner. She is a credit to your company, and I would like her permanent record to reflect our comments, thanking you
