Profile

I have over 30 years of clinical nursing experience working in a variety of acute clinical settings.

I am an advanced member of the British Association of Brain Injury Case Managers, and have mentored trainee case managers.

I have been preparing expert witness reports since 2008 reporting on care, rehabilitation needs and aids and equipment for adults and children with a wide range of disabilities in personal injury and clinical negligence cases. My past and present cases include traumatic brain injury, spinal injury, caudia equina, cerebral palsy and a range of serious orthopaedic and soft tissue injuries, amputations, visual impairment, chronic pain, palliative care, loss of service and major psychological injury.

I have attended numerous case conferences with Counsel, expert meetings, prepared joint statements and given evidence in Court, including the Royal Courts of Justice. I have undergone training in medic legal process and I am aware of my responsibilities as an expert witness under the Civil Procedure Rules. I also attend regular training courses and conferences in order to continue my professional development. In addition I have given evidence at Employment Tribunal.

I maintain my clinical skills by working as an independent case manager, a role I have been in since 1999, this has included rehabilitation case management in person injury and clinical negligence cases under single or joint instruction.

I have extensive experience of planning, coordinating and evaluating a complex range of care and rehabilitation interventions. This has also included preparing and managing care budgets. Cases have included:

  • Spinal injuries all levels (paediatric and adult).
  • Traumatic brain injury (paediatric and adult) to include walking wounded / high level physical functional difficulties / cognitive difficulties and minimal awareness.
  • Cerebral Palsy (Paediatric and Adult)
  • Respiratory diseases / Mesothelioma / COAD/ Pulmonary Embolism / Carcinoma
  • Tracheostomy / Ventilated clients
  • Learning disabilities (paediatric and adult).
  • Elderly care including dementia.
  • Palliative care
  • Orthopaedic Injuries (paediatric and adult).
  • Complex compartmental syndrome.
  • Amputees (paediatric and adult).

I have set up care regimes, including recruitment, training and management of carers, and discharging the responsibilities of the client in their role as employer. This has included care for just a few hours per week to 24-hour care teams in complex cases.

I have also been involved in the development and delivery of training programmes for disability clients and their carers.

In my role as a case manager, I have devised structured, goal focused activity programmes for clients. These programmes have enabled therapeutic tasks to be included in everyday activities with an appropriate level of support.

I have extensive experience of working with colleagues from various professional backgrounds in order to meet the needs of their clients.

I have undertaken risk assessments, aimed at promoting the client’s independence whilst creating the safest possible environment and implementing risk controls.

I have extensive experience liaising with legal teams and understanding the medico-legal process, in order to provide effective support to the client during what can be a highly stressful time.

I have liaised with schools and participated in review meetings for disabled children and ensuring their medical needs are met.

I have worked alongside architects to offer advice on aspects of disability adaptions relevant to the client and their carers.

I have considerable experience in Vocational Rehabilitation, including work reintegration consultancy, disability assessments for employers, advising on workplace and job adjustments to accommodate people with a disability, return to work programmes and stress management.

Earlier in my career I established a job coaching service for disabled job seekers involved in Job Centre programmes. This service won a national award.

I have undertaken disability and rehabilitation assessments and rehabilitation case management for insurers, as part of the claims management process within the income protection sector.

I have also reviewed medical records and provided reports for creditor insurance companies.

In addition, I have recruited and trained a nationwide network of nurses to carry out disability assessments.

I attend regular professional and personal development forums and seminars pertinent to work and of specialist interest.

I have a flexible approach in order to meet the needs of the individual and developed a speciality for handling those cases, which require a more intensive approach.
