Profile

I am a Paediatric Occupational Therapist with over 20 years’ experience working in acute and community hospital settings, specialist units, and schools. I specialise in working with infants, children, and adolescents affected by accident, trauma, disability, sensory and physical impairments and life limiting conditions.

I prepare Civil Procedure compliant expert witness Occupational Therapy reports for the Court covering a wide variety of injuries in personal injury and clinical negligence cases involving infants, children, and adolescents. I also prepare paediatric-related Breach of Duty Occupational Therapy reports. I understand the litigation process and my duties under the Civil procedure Rules pertaining to expert witnesses and Part 35.

I have experience in the following clinical conditions for infants, children, and adolescents:

  • Acquired and congenital brain injury
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Physical and sensory impairments
  • Orthopaedic injuries
  • Sensory processing / modulation differences
  • Autistic spectrum disorders
  • Chromosome aberrations
  • Learning disabilities including dyslexia and dyspraxia
  • Impaired mobility
  • Visual and hearing impairments
  • Progressive neurological diseases
  • Life limiting conditions

In addition to my expert witness role I work as a case manager and an Independent Occupational Therapist Practitioner.

I have extensive Occupational Therapy experience working in diverse settings including child development teams in health and social care, in education, the charity sector, and privately. As a persons need decrees I work closely with Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, Specialist Medical Practitioners, Rehabilitation Engineers, Social Workers, and other health professionals.

I have gained specialist skills assessing and prescribing special equipment to support the needs of individuals with impairments. This includes simple or complex equipment for daily living and may include specialist seating for optimum function and for relaxation, items to support development of bathing, toileting, personal care, moving and handling, sleep arrangements, managing stairs, vehicle access or mobility concerns. I contribute to design solutions for custom adaptation of equipment and evaluate products new to the market.

I have worked for the Charity Whizz-Kidz and represented the organisation as mobility therapist for Wales. In this role I was involved in assessment, prescription and delivery of mobility equipment which included trikes, specialist manual and hi-tech powered wheelchairs, specialist seating and environmental controls.

To improve inclusion and accessibility for those with difficulties negotiating their environment I have extensive experience assessing individuals in their homes, education environments or work places and making detailed recommendations for specific minor and major building adaptations to meet their needs. In addition, I have regularly contributed to the design of new-build projects for housing associations creating unique spaces to enhance the management of care for individuals with disability. I have worked closely with architects, surveyors and builders to create realistic solutions and optimum living environment for individuals with lifelong impairments and disabilities. I assess and review the equipment/products suitable to support an individual’s functional needs to fit in with the design of the home or environmental adaptation.

I have managed multidisciplinary teams of clinicians and have provided clinical support and supervision to team members on a daily and formal basis, participating in professional development reviews, developing new processes and documentation to support changing service delivery, reviewing and revising policies and protocols and participating in the recruitment and selection process of new therapists and support staff.

I have worked at Cardiff University as an Occupational Therapist Lecture Practitioner

I am committed to ongoing Continual Professional Development activities and maintain my Occupational Therapy clinical skills and knowledge through participating in variety of learning events and by continuing to engage in clinical work as an independent practitioner.
