Profile

I qualified as a registered nurse in 2010 and have remained within the same NHS Trust since qualification.

My immediate post qualification experience was gained working on a general medical ward before moving on to a respiratory ward and high dependancy unit where I developed a specialist interest in respiratory nursing and was promoted to Ward Sister .

In 2017 and with over 5 years respiratory nursing experience I became a specialist respiratory nurse and moved on to the specialist respiratory unit where I currently work. The unit provides respiratory expertise to inpatients throughout the hospital and also in out patient clinics and at home visits.

My clinical role is varied and I see patients with a wide range of respiratory conditions. I assess, plan, implement and monitor appropriate treatments. This includes medicine optimisation, patient education and self management support for patients. I work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians to enable a shared approach to patient care and produce improvements in patient quality of life and function .

The type of respiratory conditions I have experience in include;

  • Asthma
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ( COPD)
  • Complex breathlessness
  • Covid 19
  • Emphysema
  • Home oxygen and home ventilation
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Lung cancer
  • Mesothelioma
  • Pneumonia

My training, knowledge and skills allow me to carry out clinical assessments with advanced skills including, chest examination ,oxygen assessments prescribing and management which involve capillary and arterial blood gas sampling , interpretation ,reviewing and managing non -invasive ventilation and medication administration. As a nurse specialist I also do respiratory nurse talks on pulmonary rehabilitation and other forms of education, including mentoring students.

In addition to my current clinical role I can provide expert witness breach of duty reports for the Court on a wide range of general nursing issues and respiratory nursing care. This would include :

  • Falls
  • Pressure Ulcers
  • Extravasation Injuries
  • Blood Transfusions
  • Non -Invasive Ventilation
  • Chest Drains
  • Tracheostomy  Care

I regularly undertake appropriate training to ensure that my skills and knowledge are current and to maintain my professional development. I understand my responsibilities as an expert witness and Part 35 of the Civil Procedure Rules. I have undertaken training on the role and duties of an expert witness.
