Profile
I am a Registered General Nurse specialising in the full remit of Occupational Health nursing and have over 25 years’ experience in both public and private sector health care.
I currently work as a self-employed Occupational Health Advisor in the role of sickness absence case management as well as Health Surveillance and Health Screening. I also undertake ergonomic assessment of workplaces. I am a clinical assessor at Tier 3 for Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome. As well as being on the Nurses Register, I am also on the IOSH Register and I am a professional member of The Vocational Rehabilitation Association.
In addition to my clinical roles, I prepare medico-legal Occupational Health and Vocational Rehabilitation reports on quantum and breach of duty.
Medico-Legal experience to date:
In a medico-legal case involving military medical discharge my report “was accepted in full” after a paper screen by a judge and was notable for giving a completely different opinion outcome to that of the consultant occupational health physician, instructed by the MOD, who also happened to be a qualified barrister. (Abdourahman Jallow Vs MOD)
I have undertaken a large number of medico-legal reports on the occupational relevance of injuries and impairments that have occurred after road traffic accidents, this has been for the insurer of last resort for uninsured and untraced drivers and is therefore defendant work.
I have undertaken cases related to divorce where one party disagrees to another fitness for work/work capability.
I frequently give objectively justifiable opinion advice on the presence or absence of disability within the meaning given in the Equality Act 2010. This is both in the medico-legal report setting as well as in a conventional occupational health advisor setting.
Many of my reports have included detailed recommendations for occupational redirection, with objective justification for this when ongoing impairments have made fitness for pre-index event roles untenable. This is particularly so in the construction industry and for safety critical workers within this sector.
I have found that my experience and training in assessing the occupational relevance of hand injuries particularly useful in the large number of such cases I have seen starting medico-legal work.
Occupational Health Experience.
My experience includes working in both the Prison and Police Services providing the full remit of Occupational Health Services from firearms medicals to assessment for specific roles, to return to work advice. I have served in a commissioned rank within the British Armies Medical Services (AMS) in Occupational Health and other nursing roles. Public sector work has included the CPS, DWP, HMRC. Private sector work has included banks, vehicle manufacturers, house builders, safety critical workers and bakeries.
I have undergone training in medico-legal report writing and understand my role and responsibilities as an expert witness under The Civil Procedure Rules. In addition to the formal vocational training, I attend regular training events to maintain my professional development and re-validation requirements of the NMC and VRA, IOSH.
