Profile
I am a Critical Care Nurse with 27 years’ experience, 25 of which were spent in Intensive Care. I started my critical care journey in Ireland’s leading Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit gaining invaluable experience in complex trauma including head injuries along with the most common and complex neurosurgical and neuromedical conditions (or disorders). I was also involved in the specialised care provided to families and patients involved in organ donation.
I spent 20 years working in a general ICU in a large teaching hospital dealing with a range of multi trauma, surgical, medical, neurological conditions and a wide range of respiratory conditions including the Covid 19 pandemic. In providing care to critically ill patients I became proficient in the use of ventilator and renal support such as dialysis. I was the Clinical Nurse Manager for 8 years where I managed a large team of nurses promoting best practice in the delivery of care.
During that time, I also became the ICU Clinical Facilitator where I taught the Post Graduate Course in ICU in conjunction with Trinity College Dublin (TCD). Part of my CF role also involved co-ordinating and teaching the ICUs Foundation Programme.
After the Covid 19 pandemic I built on my coronary care knowledge and completed a postgraduate in Heart Failure in University College Dublin (UCD) and gained valuable experience in an acute Coronary Care Unit (CCU) in a major teaching Hospital.
I spent a year as a CNM/Site Nurse Manager of a 170-bedded facility which cared for patients requiring respite, palliative care, dementia care and long-term residential care. It helped broaden my proficiency in Clinical Governance and specialised management.
I am currently working in critical care and have commenced an Advanced Diploma in Medical Law.
I am a member of the Irish Association of Critical Care Nurses (IACCN) and keep up to date with clinical standards through mandatory training and regular attendances at conferences. I also keep abreast of clinical updates with the Irish Cardiac Society, Irish Heart Failure and the British Association of Critical Care Nurses (BACCN).
