Profile

I am a Registered Nurse with over 30 years of experience in nursing. I have worked throughout my career with palliative care patients in both in-patient and community settings. I care passionately about providing excellent care for patients. I am also a community nurse, experienced in District Nursing and General Practice through my work as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. In 2017 I was awarded the title of Queen’s Nurse, by the Queen’s Nursing Institute for my services to community nursing. I am an independent nurse prescriber and hold a MSc in Advanced Practice, meaning that I am experienced in holistically assessing patients from a nursing and medical perspective.

From early on in my career I knew that I wanted to work with palliative care patients, first working in a hospice, then in acute oncology settings and with patients in the community. I have also worked as a District Nurse and Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist. For several years now I have worked with the GP out of hours service as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, visiting palliative care patients who require urgent assessment of their end-of-life care needs. This includes advanced care planning, setting up ReSPECT plans, and prescribing end of life medications. I rely on many years of experience and my training in advanced communication skills to be able to discuss potentially difficult or sensitive subjects concerning my patient’s care.

My work as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in GP practice means that I am experienced in assessing, diagnosing and treating patients with minor illness. This includes conditions such as respiratory infections, including exacerbations of COPD and asthma, ENT infections, genitourinary infections, bowel conditions, wound management including treating for wound infection, dermatology and other primary health care conditions.

I currently work as a Registered Manager for a palliative care charity who provide end of life care to patients who choose to be cared for at home at the end of their lives. I lead a team of dedicated nurses who enable patients who are dying to be cared for at home until the end of their lives.
