I am a registered Paediatric Nurse and Specialist Community Public Health Nurse with experience of hospital and community care. I am currently a Specialist Nurse for Children with Complex Needs coordinating the care of children with the most complex care needs in the country. I am responsible for ensuring that all health and social care needs are linked and addressed to improve the health, educational, and social outcomes and improve quality of life for these children. I am experienced in the development of transition and complex care pathways and regularly contribute to individual Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).

I have extensive experience of working with children with complex needs, which has included:

Spinal injuries all levels
Traumatic brain injury
Respiratory diseases – Various to include acute and chronic conditions
Cognitive difficulties/Vegetative state/Minimal awareness
Tracheostomy/Ventilated children
Learning disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder
Amputees
Orthopeadic Injuries
Severe, Chronic, and Life-Limiting Health Needs
Life Threatening Conditions with Multiple and Complex Needs
Children’s Continuing Health Care
Paediatric Palliative Care

In addition to my current clinical role I provide expert witness reports on Children’s Nursing Care and Breach of Duty. I understand my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules pertaining to expert witnesses.

After qualifying as a registered children’s nurse I worked as a Staff Nurse in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at a large NHS Trust Children’s hospital in the West Midlands. The unit was responsible for the care of critically unwell children, with a range of complex health specialties including trauma, cardiac, neurology, hepatology, medical, oncology, and renal, from both within the hospital and as referrals from major district general hospitals.

Immediately prior to my current role I worked as a Health Visitor and Community Prescriber where I was responsible for monitoring child health and development and assessing the needs of babies, young children and their families to promote good health and prevent illness. I also worked with at risk or deprived groups and liaised closely with multi-disciplinary teams.

In 2017 – 2018 I was seconded to the post of Commissioning Manager for Children with Complex Needs. Here I was responsible for commissioning elements of services to support health and social care including residential placements and individual packages of support as well as supporting children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. I was jointly responsible with Social Care for commissioning Children’s Continuing Health Care packages. As part of the role I was also the Designated Clinical Officer (DCO) for Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

I attend regular training updates and seminars in order to maintain my professional development and specialist interests.
