Profile

I am a qualified occupational therapist with over 15 years post-qualification experience.

My current clinical post is Principal Occupational Therapist in Trauma and Orthopaedics at St George’s University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, one of the UK’s leading trauma centres. I have worked at St George’s since qualifying, working within a range of surgical, medical, and neurological disciplines in both ward-based and outpatient settings.

In addition to my clinical role I prepare medico-legal occupational therapy reports on aids and equipment and liability. I have undergone training in the medico-legal process and understand my role and responsibilities as an expert witness under The Civil Procedure Rules. My areas of expertise in medical conditions and traumatic injuries include:

  • Complex musculoskeletal injuries
  • Multi-limb injuries
  • Complex upper and lower limb fractures
  • Complex pelvic injuries
  • Amputations
  • Spinal injuries including central cord syndrome
  • Mild traumatic brain injury
  • Peripheral nerve injuries and hand therapy
  • Specialist wheelchair and seating assessment and provision

I am currently operational lead for teams of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and technicians working with patients admitted under Major Trauma and Elective Orthopaedic Pathways and Plastics. I am also the clinical lead for occupational therapists working in Trauma and Orthopaedics, Surgery and Vascular, with additional cover for Intensive Care.

I have developed expert skills in the management and occupational therapy for patients with a range of traumatic injuries. My experience includes activity analysis and functional rehabilitation prescription for patients with a range of orthopaedic, cognitive, and medical presentations. I am also a wheelchair prescriber experienced in the assessment and provision of wheelchairs.

I attend regular training events to maintain my professional development. In addition to my current clinical and management responsibilities I lead staff and student development initiatives within the hospital and at St George’s University of London. I lecture on both physiotherapy and occupational therapy programmes.

I am a committee member of the specialist section Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Royal College of Occupational Therapists. This involves leading local and national conferences and study events as well as reviewing and developing practice guidelines for occupational therapy.
